August Boxy Charm Unboxing: Hit or Miss?

boxy charm header

Hello everyone and welcome to my quirky corner!

Hope everyone is doing well today. I am doing okay, just quite tired after a long day at work. I am very ready for my days off this weekend!

Today I am both excited and also a bit hesitant to bring you a brand new Boxy Charm unboxing. Boxy Charm has been one of my favorite subscription boxes for a long time, but I have to admit they let me down this month. However, I like to be open and honest with my readers so I still wanted to share my thoughts on what I got.

Boxy Charm is a $21 a month beauty subscription box where you recieve 5 to 6 full size products valued at $100 or more!

So if you’re curious to see why I am disappointed and to hear my full thoughts then be sure to keep on scrolling!

Adesse Sweet Almond Cuticle Oil

nail oil

The very first product I pulled out of the box really excited me! The last product I received from Adesse was a mattifying top coat, and it is a product that I still use. This time we received a sweet almond cuticle oil and it honestly came at the perfect time because I have been looking for a cuticle oil to try out. This product contains almond, vitamin E, shea, and jojoba oils. It is meant to moisturize and soften the cuticles. I haven’t given it a proper try yet, but I can tell you that it smells AMAZING! I really do love the scent of the product. I am excited to try it out and see how well it works.

Wander Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks

wander beauty

The only product I have tried from this brand is a mascara that was a total let down, but I really love eye masks so I am curious to see how I will like this product. I have seen others try these out, and I do think they look really cool. They actually are a gold foil on the outside, and the name is really unique. I typically find eye masks to be relaxing because they are cooling under the eyes, and they provide hydration. I get intense dark circles under my eyes so I take all the help I can get to decrease the darkness. I really like that these contain aloe in them! I am excited to give them a try, and I will post an update on my thoughts.

House of Lashes Mini Collection Lashes in Wispy

I am disappointed to see lashes in this box for a couple different reasons. The first of those reasons is that I rarely wear false lashes. My eyes are very sensitive, and even if I do wear lashes I have to take them off after a couple of hours. Therefore, I am rarely excited to see lashes. However, I will say if I were to reach for a pair of lashes this is definitely a style I would go for because they are natural looking and not too long. When I do want to wear lashes this is typically what I go for so that my eyes don’t look weighed down by giant lashes (my eyes are both small and hooded).

The second reason I am disappointed in this product is that this is the first time Boxy Charm has put in a product that has a varying value. Depending on which product you received you had a $9 to $12 range in value. I don’t like that they did that at all, and they did it with two products in this box. This is the main reason they let me down this month, and I will talk more about this at the end.

Laura Lee Los Angeles Party Animal Eyeshadow Palette

This is a palette that I will obviously not be reaching for every day, but I am not totally disappointed in it either. You could use this product daily to add a fun pop of color on your lower lash line, but I rarely do that to be completely honest. I’m not much of a colorful eyeshadow person, but I am hoping maybe this will push me a bit outside of my comfort zone. The shades are gorgeous! Some swatch really well while others are a little patchy, but the true test is how they go on the eyes and I have not tried that yet.

My favorite shade is the purple called Hungover. It is such a gorgeous color! However, I will say that some of these did dye my skin a bit. I also have seen reviews where it dyed peoples eyes for a few days after wearing the shades which is common for bright colors like this. If that is something that worries you though then I would stay away from this palette. It isn’t a permanent problem. After cleansing your eyes a few times the pigment will wash away, but I know there are some people who don’t like uses strong dye close to the eyes. It is definitely something I think should be placed as a warning on the palette, but it is not mentioned at all. Even in the Boxy Charm description, it does not warn that it may dye your skin, and I just think that is a warning that people deserve to be given. I will still give this palette a try, but it isn’t something I will reach for often.

Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick in Psychic Medium

This is the second product in the box with a varying value of $21 to $24. I really do enjoy the liquid lipstick formula so I am glad that is the Smashbox product that I received. These are very comfortable on the lips, transfer proof, and they last all day long. I am not disappointed with the formula at all, but I am a bit unsure about the shade that I received. I typically don’t wear brown lipstick, but I guess there is a first time for everything. I haven’t actually put it on my lips yet so I could end up loving it, but if I don’t I do have a very nude shade that I could mix it with to make a new shade. One way or another I do feel that I can make this color work for me, but initially seeing the brown was very intimidating for me. It is a shade that I just have never tried out before, and I will not lie it makes me nervous. Does a certain shade or shade range do that to anyone else? I used to be the same way with dark berry shades, but I did get over that and now I wear shades like that nonstop throughout the Fall. So maybe brown is just a new shade that needs to grow on me before I love it.

Bang Beauty Chocolate Eyeliner

liner swatch

This product claims to be the ultimate triple threat! That sounds amazing, right? Not only can this be an eyeliner, but it also claims to be an eyeshadow base and a brow pomade. Does that sound too good to be true? Well, it should because all of the above is untrue! In my opinion, this is one of the worst products I have ever tried. I am so unbelievably disappointed in this product! It is not that pigmented, very patchy, and I can’t get it to work for me at all. Now maybe I am doing something wrong or maybe I got a bad one, but I am astonished by how bad this product is honestly. I think it is safe to say that this is the worst product I have ever received in a Boxy Charm. I literally dug my finger in 5 different times to get that swatch that is pictured. If you look closely you can still see how patchy this looks. I will definitely not be using this product at all. I will donate it because perhaps someone else will love it. I don’t ever throw away makeup I don’t like because that is such a waste, and everyone has different opinions. So I am sure someone out there can get some use out of this product.

Overall Value: $105

$105 is a great value considering that you only pay $21 a month. However, this is one of the lowest valued boxes I have ever got from them so in comparison to previous boxes it is quite disappointing. I don’t like that they did products with varying values. In my personal opinion that is something they should not do because then you always have part of your customer base that is getting the short stick when it comes to the value. As a company, I don’t see how that is a smart business decision. Again, everyone has an opinion and this is just mine. Overall I think this months box was okay, but it was a dud in comparison to their previous boxes. To me, they have set very high expectations and then they missed the bar this time around.

I also have a nagging suspicion that this dud box has something to do with the announcement of their new luxe box that is $50. It seems that once they announced the luxe aka more expensive box would launch in September the regular box decreased in value. Is this their way of trying to get all their customers to upgrade to the luxe box? Is it just the fact that in order to make the luxe box happen they have to decrease the value of the regular box? I could be totally wrong, but the value has never been so low until they announced the luxe box. Coincidence or not?

For now, I will be keeping my subscription, but if the future boxes continue to be like this one then I foresee this subscription ending. Only time will tell…

Thank you so much for spending part of your valuable time with me here in my quirky corner! I truly appreciate it! I hope you enjoyed my honest review of this month’s Boxy Charm, and have a great evening readers!
